When a customer chooses a recliner, the first question is often about comfort or appearance. From our experience working with furniture buyers, there is another question that should come much earlier:
Will the chair actually fit the space where it will be used?
This sounds simple, but dimensions become much more important when a recliner is delivered to a home, apartment, care room or showroom.
At JKY Furniture, we regularly discuss dimensions with customers before sample confirmation. A few extra measurements at the beginning can prevent many problems later.
1. Start With the Overall Width
The overall width is the easiest measurement to understand. Measure from the outside edge of one armrest to the outside edge of the other armrest.
For furniture buyers, this number is important when planning:
- ✓ Living-room layouts
- ✓ Showroom displays
- ✓ Bedroom seating
- ✓ Care-room furniture
- ✓ Multi-chair arrangements
A chair that looks compact in a product photograph may require considerably more space once placed beside a sofa, table or wall.
2. Check the Overall Depth
Depth becomes especially important for reclining chairs. A recliner needs space not only when it is upright, but also when the backrest moves backward and the footrest opens.
For this reason, we recommend checking both:
• Upright depth and Fully reclined depth
These two measurements should be considered together. For online furniture retailers, this information is also useful because customers increasingly want clear product dimensions before purchasing.
3. Measure the Seat Width
Overall chair width does not tell the whole story. The usable seat width is affected by the armrests and side structure. For different users, seat width can influence the feeling of support and comfort.
When developing or selecting a recliner range, we normally look at:
Seat width, Seat depth, Seat height, Backrest height, Armrest height. These measurements work together rather than independently.
4. Do Not Forget the Doorway
This is one of the most practical points we discuss with customers. A chair may fit perfectly inside a room but still have difficulty entering the building. Before ordering, buyers should check:
- Main entrance width
- Elevator dimensions
- Corridor width
- Apartment doorway
- Staircase turning space
For some furniture projects, a detachable backrest or modular construction can make transportation easier.
5. Leave Space Around the Chair
A recliner should not be measured as if it were a fixed chair. The surrounding area also matters. For example, users may need space to: Walk around the chair, Operate the recliner, Reach the side controls, Clean around the chair, Move the chair during maintenance.
This becomes even more important when several recliners are placed together.
6. Ask for a Dimension Drawing
Before confirming a large order, we recommend asking the manufacturer for a complete dimension drawing. A useful drawing should show Overall Width × Depth × Height as well as Seat Width × Seat Depth × Seat Height and, where applicable, Reclined Depth / Lift Position / Armrest Height.
A simple technical drawing can often answer questions that product photographs cannot.
