A recliner sofa can gain more than 65 cm in depth once the mechanism is fully open.
That is already visible in current French retail specifications. One 3-seat canapé relaxation is listed at 98 cm deep upright and 163 cm in the relax position. Another electric recliner range moves from 91 cm closed to 160 cm at maximum recline in both its 2-seat and 3-seat configurations.
Those are market references rather than GeekSofa specifications, but they show why the closed size alone does not tell the full story of a Recliner Sofa / Power Recliner Sofa.
That matters in France, where the average flat used as a principal residence has 2.9 rooms. In that type of living environment, another 60–70 cm in front of a sofa can change how the coffee table, circulation path and other furniture work around it.
For a furniture retailer, sofa importer or home-furniture brand developing a recliner range, the motion footprint therefore starts much earlier than the showroom floor. It starts with the mechanism and frame.
Closed Depth Is Only the First Dimension
French retail listings already distinguish between position fermée and position relax maximum.
That distinction is useful because a motion sofa does not occupy one fixed rectangle.
A current French 3-seater, for example, measures 202 cm wide × 98 cm deep upright and reaches 163 cm in reclined depth, with a maximum recline angle of 135°. Another electric 3-seater measures 200 × 91 cm closed and 200 × 160 cm at maximum recline.
The width barely changes.
The way the sofa uses the room does.
For a recliner sofa programme, the useful dimensions are therefore not limited to width and closed depth. The relationship between closed depth, fully reclined depth and rear wall clearance gives a much clearer picture of the product in use.
Wall-Hugger Mechanisms Save Space Behind the Sofa — Not Everywhere Around It
Wall-hugger and zero-wall mechanisms are a natural response to tighter layouts.
Recent industry references put many power wall-hugger recliners at roughly 3–6 in / 8–15 cm of rear clearance, compared with around 12–18 in / 30–46 cm for conventional recliner mechanisms. These are category reference ranges, not universal specifications; the final number still depends on the mechanism and frame.
The important part for a sofa collection is what happens next.
A wall-hugger reduces rear travel by moving the seat forward as the back reclines. The footrest still enters the living-room space, and the user moves forward with the mechanism.
So a sofa can perform very well on wall clearance while still having a substantial fully reclined footprint.
That distinction matters when a product is intended for an apartment living room rather than an open-plan room with generous floor space.
A 3-Seater Creates Several Motion Zones
The issue becomes more interesting once the product moves from a single recliner to a 2-seat or 3-seat reclining sofa.
With two moving outer seats, a 3-seater may be used with one side reclined, both sides reclined or both seats upright. Each position changes the usable floor area in front of the sofa.
The same design language can therefore behave differently across a collection:
- a compact 2-seat recliner may need tighter control of rear clearance and forward travel;
- a 3-seat Power Recliner Sofa has to accommodate two moving seating zones around the same coffee table and circulation area;
- a corner recliner adds another relationship between the motion seats, chaise or corner section and the room layout.
This is where simply scaling the width of one sofa structure is not always enough.
The mechanism, frame geometry and finished proportions have to make sense for each configuration.
Motion Footprint Is Also a Furniture-Design Decision
The mechanism sits underneath the sofa, but its movement shows up in the finished furniture.
It affects seat depth, footrest position, arm proportions, rear clearance and the overall silhouette.
A mechanism designed for low rear clearance may need a different frame geometry from a conventional recliner. A 3-seat configuration may need a different internal arrangement from a loveseat. A cleaner contemporary silhouette may require the mechanism to fit within tighter visual proportions.

Current French-market products show why this matters.
A sofa moving from 98 cm to 163 cm in depth and another moving from 91 cm to 160 cm are both perfectly valid recliner designs. They simply occupy the room differently once opened.
There is no reason every Recliner Sofa range should be built around the same movement profile.
